Nancy Drew Mystery Stories

“Come on, let’s make a snow man!” cried Bert Bobbsey, as he ran about in the white drifts of snow that were piled high in the yard in front of the house. “That’ll be lots of fun!” chimed in Freddie Bobbsey, who was Bert’s small brother. “We can make a man, and then throw snowballs at him, and he won’t care a bit; will he, Bert?”

“No, I guess a snow man doesn’t care how many times you hit him with snowballs,” laughed the older boy, as he tried to catch a dog that was leaping about in the drifts, barking for joy. “The more snowballs you throw at a snow man the bigger he gets,” said Bert.

Nancy Drew is an eighteen-year-old high school graduate. Her father, Carson Drew, is a well-known criminal defense lawyer. The Drews reside in River Heights and employ a housekeeper, Hannah Gruen. In early editions, she is depicted as a mere servant; later in the series she becomes more of a family member.

In the Harriet Adams rewrite, Nancy is depicted as a less impulsive, less headstrong girl of Stratemeyer’s and Mildred’s vision, to a milder, more sedate and refined girl— “more sugar and less spice”, with an extensive wardrobe and a more charitable outlook. Helen now appears older, perhaps in preparation for her eventual “write-out” after Volume 4 of the revised series (no explanation is made in the original series) to introduce Bess and her cousin George. Readers have noted two figures illustrated in the same vein as the cousins appear in a 1959 illustration at a girls’ camp). Perceived racial stereotypes are omitted. Action is increased significantly and is faster-paced. Greater detail is given to develop Nancy and her home.

Kathleen Mansfield Murry (1888-1923) was a prominent New Zealand modernist writer of short fiction. She took on the pen-name Katherine Mansfield upon the publication of her first collection of short stories, In a German Pension, in 1911. She also contracted gonorrhoea around this time, an event that was to plague her with arthritic pain for the rest of her short life, as well as to make her view herself as a ‘soiled’ woman. Her life and work were changed forever with the death of her brother, a soldier, during World War I.

She was shocked and traumatised by the experience, so much so that her work began to take refuge in the nostalgic reminiscences of their childhood in New Zealand. Miss Brill, the bittersweet story of a fragile woman living an ephemeral life of observation and simple pleasures in Paris, established Mansfield as one of the preeminent writers of the Modernist period, upon its publication in 1920’s. She followed with the equally praised collection, The Garden Party, published in 1922.

Bilbo le Hobbit (The Hobbit) est un roman de fantasy de l’écrivain et philologue britannique J. R. R. Tolkien. Il raconte l’histoire du hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Bilbon Sacquet[N 1]), qui accompagne le magicien Gandalf et un groupe de nains dans leur voyage vers la Montagne Solitaire, à la recherche du trésor gardé par le dragon Smaug.

C’est la première �”uvre publiée qui explore l’univers de la Terre du Milieu créé par Tolkien. Au sein de cette fiction, l’action de Bilbo le Hobbit se déroule en l’an 2941 du Troisième Âge, dans un contexte de montée en puissance du Seigneur des Ténèbres, Sauron[1].

Rédigé par fragments de la fin des années 1920 au début des années 1930, Bilbo le Hobbit n’a d’autre but à l’origine que de divertir les jeunes enfants de l’auteur[2]. Le manuscrit inachevé circule néanmoins parmi les proches de Tolkien et arrive finalement chez l’éditeur londonien Allen & Unwin, qui demande à Tolkien d’achever le récit et de l’illustrer.
