داستان مصور یا کُمیک‌استریپ ، نقاشی، یا مجموعه‌ای از نقاشی‌های دنباله‌دار است که ماجرایی را روایت می‌کند. به کسی که کمیک را می‌کشد کارتونیست می‌گویند، این کمیک‌ها معمولاً در دوره‌های مرتبی به چاپ می‌رسند.

شرح روایت و بیان ماجراها به زبان تصویر و بعضاً با استفاده از دیالوگ‌ها، به زمان مصر باستان بر می‌گردد. اما اگر شرح روایت‌های مدرن را در نظر بگیریم، کمیک اولین بار در کشورهای آلمان و انگلستان پا گرفت. اولین کمیک‌های آمریکایی در قرن بیستم شکل گرفتند. دیالوگ‌ها درون بالن‌ها گفته می‌شد، برای غافلگیری از علامت تعجب روی کله‌ها استفاده شد و برخی از لغات مثل «زارت و زورت و آخ و پاخ» برای بیان حالات یا ضربات استفاده گشت و تا امروز نیز کاربرد دارد. اولین کتاب کمیک بر اساس مجموعه‌ای از کمیک‌استریپ‌های روزنامه‌ای شکل گرفت.

از اولین نشانه های کمیک در تاریخ، ستون تراژان در شهر رم در ایتالیاست. کار ساخت این ستون در سال ۱۱۳ میلادی به پایان رسید و از سوی سنای روم و مردم به افتخار پیروزی های تراژان، امپراتور روم در دو نبردش علیه داسیایی ها در سال های ۱۰۲ و ۱۰۵ میلادی به او تقدیم شد. این ستون دارای نقشینه ای مارپیچ است که تا بالای ستون ادامه داشته و بخش هایی از این نبرد به صورت نقش برجسته هایی روی آن کنده کاری شده است. غیر از این ستون در دیگر تمدن ها هم فرش ها، سنگ تراشی ها و دیگر مواردی وجود داشته که داستانی را به طور پیوسته با تصاویر روایت می کردند. که این درواقع تعریف امروزی ما از کمیک است. مجموعه ای از نقاشی های دنباله دار که ماجرایی را روایت می کند.

در آمریکا محققان برای کمیک ها دوره هایی تعریف کرده اند که به ترتیب شامل : دوره طلایی، دوره نقره ای، دوره برنزی و دوره مدرن است. همان طور که گفتیم، دوره طلایی با معرفی سوپرمن در سال ۱۹۳۸ آغاز شد و در سال ۱۹۵۴ با تصویب قانین سخت گیرانه برای کمیک ها به پایان رسید. در این دوره بسیاری از ابرقهرمان های معروف مانند سوپرمن، بتمن، کاپیتان آمریکا، واندر وومن و کاپیتان مارول خلق شدند. ناشر کتاب سوپرمن، Detective Comics بود؛ به نوعی پدرخوانده شرکت عظیم DC Comic امروزی. 

این شرکت خالق شخصیت هایی همچون بتمن، رابین، فلش، گرین لنترن و بسیاری دیگر بوده است. کمیک بوک ها در زمان جنگ جهانی دوم به دلیل ارزان بودن، گرافیک خوب، خوش خوانی و مشخص بودن قطب منفی و مثبت به محبوبیت فراوانی دست یافتند. در بعضی از این داستان ها قطب منفی نازی ها به خصوص رهبر آنها هیتلر بود.

در سال های اخیر کاراکترهای کمیک از کاغذ و جوهر فراتر رفته اند و تبدیل به پدیده هایی جهانی شده اند. امروز ما «اونجرز» را داریم که تبدیل به سومین فیلم پرفروش تاریخ سینما شده است. فیلم «بتمن آغاز می کند» و «مرد آهنی»، هم سهتند که سردمدار جریانی از اقتباس کمیک بوک ها شده اند. جریانی که حالاحالاها ادامه خواهدداشت. اما دلیل این همه توجه به کمیک ها و از طرف دیگر به فیلم هایی که از روی کمیک ها ساخته شده اند، چیست؟

شاید مهم ترین دلیل، پیچیدگی شخصیت های قهرمان و ضدقهرمان در این آثار است. ضمن اینکه امروزه کمیک ها و کاراکترهای درون آن معانی و ارزش عمیق تری برای مخاطبان خود دارند و مخاطبان، خودشان را به کاراکترهای کمیک نزدیک تر می بینند امروز برخلاف گذشته، با وجود قدرت زیاد ابرقهرمان های کمیکی، آنها بعضا با مشکلاتی هم دست و پنجه نرم می کنند که شاید برای مردم عادی هم پیش بیید. 

شخصیت های منفی دیگر آدم های روانی نیستند که بی دلیل آدم بکشند، بلکه درست یا غلط برای رفتار خود دلیل دارند و… علاوه بر اینها در کمیک ها شاهد قصه گویی به صوئرت ناب هستیم. فرمی که کمیک ها دارند به نویسندگان اجازه این کار را می دهد تا دیوانه وارترین ایده ها را به تصویر بکشند بدون آنکه نگران مخاطب، هزینه تولید و هزار و یک مساله دیگر باشند و… دلیل دیگر شاد متن کم و تصاویر بسیار زیاد و مهیج کمیک ها باشد که خوانندگان تنبل امروز را بیشتر به این سبک علاقه مند می کند. 

به مرور نوع طراحی و رنگ آمیزی و  شیوه‌ی ارائه‌ی کمیک استریپ ها عوض شد و  این هنر، که آن را هنر نهم نیز نامیده اند، امروزه گستره‌ی وسیعی دارد : کتاب‌های کمیک استریپ (همان مجموعه‌های تن‌تن و تارزان و…)، وب کمیک (اینترنتی و آنلاین)، کمیک استریپ‌هایی دارای ژانرهای مختلف پلیسی-‌‌‌جنایی، دراماتیک و …، کمیک‌های زیرزمینی، کمیک‌هایی با شخصیت‌های حیوانات، حتی بی‌کلام (مانند گارفیلد و اسنوپی) با گونه‌های سبزیجات یا حتی مواد معدنی، شخصیت‌هایی که با گذشت زمان پیر می شوند، قصه‌هایی که اصلا شخصیت مرکزی ندارند و…  امروزه حتی کمیک استریپ‌هایی یافت می شوند که محصول مشترک یک داستان نویس و یک طراحند.

همانطور که از نام کمیک بر می‌آید، محتوای آن اساساً مطلب خنده‌دار است، اولین کمیک‌استریپ‌هایی که در دههٔ ۱۹۳۰ پا به‌عرصهٔ وجود گذاشتند، شامل ماجراهای خنده‌دار و ماجراجویانهٔ قهرمانانی چون باک راجرز، تارزان و ماجراهای تن تن بود. 

البته قرار گرفتن نام کمیک مربوط به تاریخچهٔ آن است . اکنون با وجود تغییرات عمده‌ای که در نوع طراحی ، موضوع ،کمپزسیون ، انتخاب زاویهٔ دید و دیگر المان های کمیک به وجود آمده و این هنر روایتگر را بسیار متفاوت از گذشتهٔ خود کرده ، هنوز نام کمیک روی آن باقی مانده است. درحالی که مایهٔ طنز تنها در شاخهٔ خاصی از این هنر به کار گرفته می‌شود.
