 Social Determinants of Linguistic Complexity

Peter Trudgill looks at why human societies at different times and places produce different kinds of language. He considers how far social factors influence language structure and compares languages and dialects spoken across the globe, from Vietnam to Nigeria, Polynesia to Scandinavia, and from Canada to Amazonia. 



Modesty prevents Pennsylvanian Dutch Mennonites using the verb wotte (‘want’); stratified society lies behind complicated Japanese honorifics; and a mountainous homeland suggests why speakers of Tibetan-Burmese Lahu have words for up there and down there. But culture and environment don’t explain why Amazonian Jarawara needs three past tenses, nor why Nigerian Igbo can make do with eight adjectives, nor why most languages spoken in high altitudes do not exhibit an array of spatial demonstratives. Nor do they account for some languages changing faster than others or why some get more complex while others get simpler. The author looks at these and many other puzzles, exploring the social, linguistic, and other factors that might explain them and in the context of a huge range of languages and societies. 



Peter Trudgill writes readably, accessibly, and congenially. His book is jargon-free, informed by acute observation, and enlivened by argument : it will appeal to everyone with an interest in the interactions of language with culture, environment, and society.

On the first Sunday after Thanksgiving they wave their daughter Blair off to Peru to work for the Peace Corps, and they suddenly realize that “for the first time in her young and sheltered life Blair would spend Christmas away from home.”

Luther Krank sees his daughter’s Christmas absence as an opportunity. He estimates that “a year earlier, the Luther Krank family had spent $6,100 on Christmas,” and have “precious little to show for it.” So he makes an executive decision, telling his wife, friends, and neighbors that “we won’t do Christmas.” Instead, Luther books a 10-day Caribbean cruise. But things start to turn nasty when horrified neighbors get wind of the Krank’s subversive scheme and besiege the couple with questions about their decision.

Grisham builds up a funny but increasingly terrifying picture of how this tight-knit community turns on the Kranks, who find themselves under increasing pressure to conform. As the tension mounts, readers may wonder whether they will manage to board their plane on Christmas day. Skipping Christmas is Grisham-lite, with none of the serious action or drama of his legal thrillers, but a funny poke at the craziness of Christmas.

Derek Jewell, (1927 – 21 November 1985) was a British writer, broadcaster and music critic. A music critic for the London Sunday Times for twenty-three years, Jewell wrote extensively about jazz, and also introduced British audiences to avant garde jazz, rock and improvisational music, especially through live performances on his BBC Radio show, Sounds Interesting.

In addition to producing columns of music criticism for the Sunday Times (he also wrote periodically for the now-defunct Illustrated London News), Jewell was the author of a number of books about popular music including The Popular Voice (1980), Duke – A Portrait of Duke Ellington (1977), and Frank Sinatra (co-written with George Perry, 1985). He collaborated with his wife, Elizabeth Jewell, on a series of Sunday Times crossword collections and wrote two novels, Come In Number One, Your Time Is Up (1971) and Sellout (1973).

نخستین شعر را در ۱۳ سالگی سرود که نقش روزنامه دیواری مدرسه شد. اولین جایزه شعر را که یک جلد دیوان جامی بود در سال چهارم دبیرستان به پیشنهاد دکتر باستانی پاریزی که آن زمان از دبیران دبیرستان بهمنیار بود، از رئیس آموزش و پرورش استان دریافت کرد.

نزد ملت ایران شهرت طاهره صفارزاده با شعر “کودک قرن‌” پدید آمد. در امتحان ورودی دانشگاه در رشته‌های حقوق‌، زبان و ادبیات فارسی، و زبان و ادبیات انگلیسی قبول شد و چون تردید در انتخاب داشت خانواده‌اش به استخاره رجوع کردند و در نتیجه در زبان و ادبیات انگلیسی لیسانس گرفت‌…
